Travis N. Rieder is an Associate Research Professor and Director of Education Initiatives at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, where he also directs the Master of Bioethics degree program. He holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Philosophy and Health Policy & Management. His research focuses on ethical issues in the opioid crisis and climate change, including procreative ethics and sustainability policy. Rieder is the author of In Pain: A Bioethicist’s Personal Struggle with Opioids (2019) and Catastrophe Ethics: How to Choose Well in a World of Tough Choices (2022). He is a faculty affiliate at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health’s Center for Public Health Advocacy and leads initiatives such as the Global Food Ethics & Policy Program.
Rieder’s work bridges academic and applied ethics, addressing topics like pain management transparency, clinician leadership in public health crises, and moral frameworks for climate action. His recent speaking engagements include keynote addresses at the American Dental Society of Anesthesia and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. He actively engages the public through media commentary and op-eds, emphasizing ethical decision-making in catastrophic contexts.
His educational background includes a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University, an MA from the University of South Carolina, and a BA from Hanover College. Rieder’s interdisciplinary approach integrates philosophy, public health, and policy to tackle pressing ethical challenges in healthcare and environmental sustainability.
