Anne Barnhill is an Associate Research Professor at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, specializing in the intersection of philosophy, bioethics, public health, and food policy. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary practical ethics, particularly addressing the ethics of public health policies, food systems, and sustainable diets. She holds an A.B. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from New York University.
Dr. Barnhill’s research includes the ethics of pandemic policies, human rights in food systems, and the legitimacy of healthy eating interventions. Her co-authored book Healthy Eating Policy and Political Philosophy: A Public Reason Approach (2022) explores ethical frameworks for food policy. She has contributed to projects like the Interim Framework for COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation and the Essential Workers Project, emphasizing equitable pandemic responses.
Her articles address topics such as racialized marketing of unhealthy foods, ethical considerations in digital contact tracing, and vaccine passport policies. Recent work examines the role of public reason in justifying health policies and the ethical complexity of food industry influence.
Barnhill collaborates on initiatives like the Choose Food: Ethically Benchmarking Food Systems and the Global Food Ethics & Policy Program, aiming to inform ethical food system reforms. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges philosophy, public health, and policy to address pressing societal challenges.
