Tracy L. Steffes is a Professor of History and Professor of Education at Brown University, and currently serves as Chair of the Department of Education. Her research focuses on the intersection of public schooling, governance, and social inequality in 20th century U.S. history. She holds dual appointments in the Department of History and the Department of Education.
Steffes earned her PhD in History from the University of Chicago (2007), along with an MA (1999) and BA (1998). Her scholarly contributions include two major books: School, Society, & State (2012) and Structuring Inequality (2024). She is also working on a new project exploring the role of for-profit businesses in public education.
Her research interests span educational inequality, political development, and policy analysis, with a focus on how schooling interacts with housing, tax policies, and governance structures. She has received prestigious fellowships from institutions like the Guggenheim Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation.
In teaching, Steffes offers courses such as Brown v. Board of Education, Urban Schools in Historical Perspective, and Inequality and American Capitalism. She actively contributes to academic organizations like the American Historical Association and the History of Education Society.
