Tracy L. Steffes is a Professor of Education and History at Brown University, serving as Chair of the Education Department. Her research focuses on the intersection of public schooling, state governance, and social inequality in twentieth-century U.S. history. She has authored two major books, including Structuring Inequality (2024) and School, Society, & State (2012), and has received prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, and others. Her current project explores the historical role of for-profit businesses in public education.
