Dr. McKinney earned her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Her work emphasizes conservation strategies, such as installing aerial bridges in Costa Rica to reduce road fatalities for mantled howler monkeys. She co-edited the book Primates in Anthropogenic Landscapes (2022), exploring primate adaptability in human-influenced environments.
Her research interests include human-primate interactions, wildlife conservation in fragmented habitats, and the socio-ecological impacts of anthropogenic changes. She collaborates globally on projects addressing primate welfare, ecotourism, and sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife.
