Torben Beernaert

Torben Beernaert is a researcher at DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research) and completed his PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His work focuses on applying model-based systems engineering techniques, particularly Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) methods, to address complexity in nuclear fusion projects.

His research bridges nuclear fusion technology, plasma physics, and control systems engineering, emphasizing multi-domain integration and technical risk management. He has contributed to advancements in fusion diagnostics, plasma control architecture, and designer productivity optimization.

Scientific awards include the Best Paper on Ecological Vehicles (2015). He defended his PhD thesis 'Discovering the potential of dependency structure modelling for fusion systems engineering' on August 7, 2024, at TU/e, with promoters Prof. Marco R. de Baar and Prof. L.F.P. Etman.
