Niek Lopes Cardozo

Prof. Niek Lopes Cardozo is a full-time Professor and chair of the Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He transitioned from a part-time role (1994) to full-time professorship in 2009. His career spans 43+ years in nuclear fusion research, focusing on plasma physics, reactor engineering, and scalability challenges. He leads TU/e’s interdisciplinary master’s program in Nuclear Fusion, established in 2012, which enrolls >25 international students annually. Key initiatives include founding FUSENET (70+ members) and the ITER-NL consortium.

Education: MSc (1981) and PhD (1985) in Experimental Physics from Utrecht University. Postdoc at the Joint European Torus (UK), then head of Fusion Physics at FOM Rijnhuizen (1987–2008). Current research emphasizes sustainable fusion reactor design, material availability, and global energy system integration. Post-retirement roles include chairing TU/e’s Complaints Committee for Scientific Integrity and coordinating the Nuclear Fusion Honors Track.
