Professor Tony Weiss is the McCaughey Chair in Biochemistry and a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biotechnology at The University of Sydney, affiliated with the Charles Perkins Centre and School of Life and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on elastin-based biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, with emphasis on wound repair, cardiovascular regeneration, and extracellular matrix biology.
He leads the Weiss Laboratory, a global leader in tropoelastin research, exploring its role in elastic tissue repair and synthetic elastin applications. His work bridges fundamental science and clinical translation, with 174 patents and collaborations in biotechnology (e.g., Elastagen Pty Ltd).
Key achievements include the Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation and over 250 scientific publications. His lab’s grants span international collaborations, supporting projects on mesenchymal stem cells, scar reduction, and vascular regeneration. Students under his supervision explore topics like CRIP1 signaling in tropoelastin response and stem cell heterogeneity.
- Research Themes: Elastic tissue assembly, scarless wound healing, cardiovascular repair
- Labs/Teams: Weiss Lab (University of Sydney), collaborations with Allergan/AbbVie and global academic institutions
