Professor Tony Thorpe holds the position of Professor of Construction IT and Construction Engineering Management Part C Tutor at Loughborough University's School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering. With over 40 years of experience, his expertise spans construction management, digital construction technologies, and BIM integration. He has supervised 40 PhD students and authored over 180 refereed publications.
His research focuses on construction IT, including data integration via BIM, off-site construction automation, and circular economy applications. Current projects include model-based systems engineering for virtual railway networks (with Joseph Murphy) and embedding circular economy principles in building sectors (with Katherine Adams). Recent work explored collaborative dynamics in construction (Eloise Grove's EngD project).
Key research themes include:
- Construction supply-chain optimization
- RFID/barcode data capture systems
- BIM standardization and communication efficiency
- Freeform construction and 3D printing in architecture
His publications highlight innovations like automated scanning systems for infrastructure, causal analysis in ethics, and strategic management frameworks. He advocates for BIM education reforms through case studies in UK universities.
Teaching contributions include developing curriculum for digital construction practices and managing MERIT simulation tools for construction education.
