Tony Ruzzini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan, with an associate membership in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology. His research focuses on microbe-host interactions, particularly the roles of plasmid-encoded biosynthetic gene clusters and bacterially produced small molecules in both symbiotic and pathogenic contexts.
- Academic Credentials: PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (University of British Columbia, 2013), BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Trent University, 2008), Postdoctoral Fellowships at Harvard Medical School (2014–2017) and University of Paris-Sud (2013–2014).
His lab develops innovative approaches to study microbial metabolites and their ecological functions, spanning veterinary microbiology, biochemistry, and chemical biology. Current projects include analyzing antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in bovine pathogens (Mycoplasma bovis, Pasteurellaceae) and investigating microbial interactions in honey bees (Paenibacillus larvae).
Recent publications highlight expertise in antimicrobial resistance (macrolide esterases, feedlot cattle), host-microbe chemistry (bile salt hydrolases, spermidine in fungal pathogenesis), and ecological microbiology (fungicide impacts on honey bee colonies, biosynthetic pathway evolution in ant-associated bacteria).
