Professor Tony Pollard holds a Chair in Conflict History and Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, where he directs the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology and convenes the world’s first MSc program in Conflict Archaeology & Heritage. His work spans battlefield projects across the UK, Europe, Africa, and South America, focusing on conflicts from the 18th to 20th centuries, including the Jacobite rebellions, World Wars, and the Falklands War.
- Co-director of Waterloo Uncovered (2015–present), integrating archaeology with veteran recovery
- Lead academic for the Great War Project, examining WWI’s impact on the University of Glasgow
- Co-director of Digging In, reconstructing WWI trenches in Pollok Park
His research combines military history with archaeological methodology, emphasizing the material culture of conflict, landscape analysis, and the ethical implications of war grave investigations. Recent publications highlight digital approaches, cross-century conflict comparisons, and the interplay between historical memory and physical battlefields.
As co-presenter of the BBC series Two Men in a Trench, Pollard has brought battlefield archaeology to public attention, complemented by his editorial role at The Journal of Conflict Archaeology. His supervised PhDs cover topics such as Jacobite material culture, GIS modeling of conflict landscapes, and the laws of war in 16th-century Europe.
