Dr. Jonathan Worton is a Lecturer in Humanities, Cultures and Environment at the University of Chester's Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a BA (Hons) from Leicester Polytechnic, an MA (Distinction) from the University of Chester, and a PhD from the University of Chester. His research focuses on British military history spanning the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with specializations in the English Civil Wars, Jacobitism, fortification history, and military landscapes.
Worton's research examines garrison warfare tactics, regional conflict dynamics, and socio-political dimensions of military engagements in border regions like the Welsh Marches. His publications consistently explore themes of local loyalties, military mobilization, and battlefield archaeology across various English counties.
He has authored multiple books and journal articles analyzing pivotal conflicts including the Battles of Montgomery (1644) and Glenshiel (1719). His scholarship demonstrates methodological approaches influenced by antiquarian traditions, emphasizing interdisciplinary analysis of historical landscapes and material culture.
