Tony Cheng is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Duke University. His research focuses on how state power legitimation influences inequalities within communities, particularly examining policing and institutional reforms. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Yale University and a J.D. from NYU School of Law.
His book The Policing Machine: Enforcement, Endorsements, & the Illusion of Public Input (2024, University of Chicago Press) explores police resistance to reforms through political capital cultivation. His work has been published in top journals like the American Journal of Sociology and Criminology.
Cheng’s research has earned awards from the American Sociological Association, American Society of Criminology, and Law & Society Association. He has also received grants from the Russell Sage Foundation and an NSF CAREER Award.
