Tony A. Mowrer serves as Professor in the Department of Music within Fresno State's College of Arts and Humanities, where he has been Choral Music Education Specialist since 2007. His multifaceted roles include coordinating the Music Education program, teaching undergraduate/graduate courses across music theory, ear training, and choral conducting, and directing the University Choirs. He previously served as Music Department Chair from 2012-2016.
His educational background includes:
- Baccalaureate in Music, Lubbock Christian University
- Master's in Music History, West Chester University
- Doctorate in Music Education, Temple University
- Additional studies at Northeastern Christian Junior College and Texas Tech University
Dr. Mowrer's research centers on ensemble tuning precision, music integration into K-12 curricula, and advocacy for music education programs. His scholarship published in The Choral Journal, California English, and CMEA Magazine bridges theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications. He actively translates research into practice through regional clinician work and adjudication.
With 45 years of experience spanning high school and university levels, he has mentored generations of music educators. His high school choirs consistently earned Excellent/Superior ratings at festivals, with students selected for national ACDA Honor Choirs. At Fresno State, he supervises student teachers and shapes credentialing standards through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing's Board of Institutional Reviewers. He also serves as an International Baccalaureate examiner.
Dr. Mowrer maintains strong community engagement as tenor section leader and board member of the Fresno Community Chorus, performing with both Master Chorale and Coro Piccolo ensembles.
