Tomoko Kitago

Tomoko Kitago, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine and Director of the Human Motor Recovery Laboratory at the Burke Neurological Institute. She completed her M.D. at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by Neurology residency and Vascular Neurology fellowship at Columbia University. Previously a faculty member at Columbia University (2011–2017), she transitioned to Burke Neurological Institute to focus on motor recovery post-neurological injury.

Dr. Kitago’s research focuses on motor recovery mechanisms following stroke and other neurological injuries. Her work integrates kinematic analysis to study behavioral changes during rehabilitation, particularly evaluating technologies like constraint-induced movement therapy and robot-assisted interventions. She aims to combine pharmacological and technological approaches to enhance neurorehabilitation outcomes.

Her lab has conducted clinical trials on stroke rehabilitation, including studies on device-assisted therapy and pharmacological interventions. Collaborations span institutions such as Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, and NIH. A notable grant is the NIH-funded "Functional data analytics for kinematic assessments of motor control."

She leads the Human Motor Recovery Laboratory at Burke Neurological Institute, collaborating with institutions like Weill Cornell Medicine and the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute. The lab investigates novel rehabilitation strategies and technologies to improve mobility post-stroke.
