Professor Tomke König serves as Professor of Gender Sociology at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Sociology, holding this position since December 2012. She additionally coordinates the MA Gender Studies program and serves on the Board of the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (IZG), with office location in Building X C3-248.
Her research expertise spans gender studies, family dynamics, social inequality, and elites research. Professor König's scholarly work examines transformations in symbolic gender orders, particularly focusing on how couples organize domestic spaces and share household responsibilities. Her habilitation thesis "Family Means Sharing Work. Transformations of the Symbolic Gender Order" submitted to the University of Basel represents a significant contribution to understanding evolving gender relations in family contexts.
Professor König teaches across multiple Gender Studies modules including Introduction to Gender Studies (30-MGS-1), Concepts of Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (30-MGS-2), and Applied Gender Studies components. She also serves on the Faculty Conference as a university lecturer member and participates in the Habilitation Committee.
Her academic journey includes substantial research experience at the University of Basel's Center for Gender Studies, where she directed the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project "How do couples live? Change, persistence, and gender relations in the design, use, and maintenance of spaces" from 2006-2010.
