Prof. Dr. Anika König is an Acting Professor at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin. She specializes in Medical Anthropology, Gender Studies, and intersections of technology and reproduction. Her research focuses on transnational surrogacy, chronic illness activism, and genetic testing ethics. She has held interim professorships since 2021 and previously conducted postdoctoral research at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Australian National University.
Education: PhD in Anthropology from Australian National University (2013), MAs in Sociology (Technische Universität Berlin) and Ethnology (Freie Universität Berlin). She has led projects like the Volkswagen Foundation-funded 'Children in Between: Disruptions of Transnational Surrogacy in the Time of Covid-19' (2021–2023).
Research interests include reproductive technologies, body anthropology, and digital ethnography. Recent work examines surrogacy markets during crises and activism among chronically ill individuals. She has published widely in journals like Medical Anthropology and Cultural Studies.
Consultation hours: Mondays 2–3 PM by appointment. Active in public anthropology initiatives, including collaborations on theater-based ethnography and interdisciplinary interventions.
