Tome Marelić is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Zadar. His research focuses on the history of cartography, with an emphasis on resolving the enigmatic origins of portolan charts through cartometric analysis and historical source integration. He teaches courses including Cartography I/II, Geoinformatics, and Maritime Geography, and chairs the Cartographic Heritage section of the Croatian Cartographic Society.
Marelić's research centers on deconstructing the geometric and historical foundations of medieval and early modern nautical cartography. His work challenges established narratives about portolan charts' medieval origins, employing rigorous cartometric techniques to analyze spatial accuracy, geometric properties, and transmission lineages. Key interests include loxodromic geometry, Ptolemaic/Eratosthenesian influences on medieval mapmaking, and the evolution of Adriatic Sea representations.
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on cartometric analysis of historical maps, with recurring themes of geometric accuracy validation, pre-medieval influences on portolan charts, and methodological innovations in comparing historical and modern cartographic projections. Articles frequently examine Adriatic Sea renderings as case studies for broader conclusions about Mediterranean cartographic history.
