Tom Witek is a Professor in the Music Program at Polk State College, where he transitioned from a professional bassist and composer career to shape aspiring musicians. With a focus on blending performance expertise and academic rigor, he emphasizes practice, resilience, and the intersection of music education with emerging technologies like AI.
- Bachelor of Arts in Music, Rutgers University–Newark (2007)
- Master of Music in Jazz Studies, University of New Orleans (year inferred 2010)
Witek’s research interests include jazz sight-reading pedagogy, bass performance, contemporary music, and the integration of technology in music education. His 2015–2023 doctoral dissertation at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music compared jazz bass sight-reading manuals, establishing a foundation for practical music education.
As an educator, Witek advocates for performance-driven learning, drawing from his experience gigging 330+ nights annually in New Orleans. He is not linked to any formal scientific awards but actively contributes to student-led ensembles like the Jazz Band and Symphonic Band. The Florida Legislature’s $16.2 million investment in the Winter Haven Fine Arts Building has enhanced his teaching environment, which he credits for fostering student excellence.
