Tom Sarmiento is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Kansas State University's Department of English. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (2014) and is a faculty member of the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies program. His research and teaching focus on Filipinx American and queer literature, cultural studies, and visual culture, with an emphasis on postcolonial and interdisciplinary approaches.

Research Interests: Tom Sarmiento's scholarly work centers on Filipinx American and queer literature and culture. His research explores intersections of postcolonial theory, feminist theory, and cultural studies, particularly examining representations of Filipinxs in the Midwest through literature, theater, television, and popular culture. He also investigates the role of writing as a nonlinear process and a tool for social change.
Contributions: He is currently working on a book manuscript titled Queer Filipinx Midwest Critique, analyzing Filipinx identities in Midwestern media and literature. His published work includes an article in MELUS: Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States, titled The Empire Sings Back: Glee's Queer Materialization of Filipina/o America, which critiques the television show Glee through a queer Filipinx lens.
