PJ Raval serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Radio, Television and Film within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. A queer, first-generation Filipinx American filmmaker, his academic role integrates creative practice with social justice advocacy through documentary production and teaching.
His research interests center on anti-colonial filmmaking methodologies, Asian American and Filipinx diasporic storytelling frameworks, and LGBTQ+ world-making practices. Raval's work consistently examines power structures through the lived experiences of marginalized communities, with particular focus on queer elders, transgender rights, and postcolonial identities in the Philippines and United States.
