Tom Houlton is a Lecturer in Film and Literature at the University of York’s Department of English and Related Literature, affiliated with the Centre for Modern Studies. He joined York in 2021 as an Associate Lecturer and transitioned to his current role in 2022. Previously, he taught at the University of Sussex (2012–2017) and contributed as editor to the peer-reviewed journal Excursions. Educated at the University of Cambridge and New York University (MA in Museum Studies, 2008), he holds a PhD from Sussex. His research focuses on monuments as cultural and political objects, exploring their roles in colonialism, queer ecology, and postcolonial memory.
Key research areas include psychogeographical analysis of monuments, decolonial critiques of colonial statues (e.g., Edward Colston and Cecil Rhodes), Holocaust memorials, and LGBTQIA+ representation. His monograph Monuments as Cultural and Critical Objects (Routledge, 2023) synthesizes psychoanalytic theory, queer studies, and decolonial frameworks. Teaching spans undergraduate modules like A World of Literature and Adventures in the Archive, and postgraduate work on queer theory and Hollywood cinema.
Externally, Houlton co-leads the StreetLife Project in York, a community initiative funded by the UK Government, focusing on urban sustainability and inclusive public spaces. His creative writing has appeared in outlets like Entropy Magazine, blending academic and artistic approaches to cultural critique.
