Tom Rippeth is a Professor of Physical Oceanography at Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences, specializing in turbulence and mixing in marine environments. He holds a PhD from the University of Wales (1993) and has extensive postdoctoral and fellowship experience. His research focuses on Arctic Ocean dynamics, tidal mixing effects, and the role of physical processes in biogeochemical cycles. He has secured over £5.46 million in research funding as PI/co-I, leading major projects like OSMOSIS and Tea-COSI.
Key grants include NERC funding for Arctic studies and tidal energy research, with notable collaborations across institutions like NOC and SAMS. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to climate action and life below water. He supervises PhD students focusing on Arctic mixing, nutrient cycling, and turbulence measurement techniques. Awards include the 2019 Vaisala Prize for his ADCP turbulence measurement innovations.
Research highlights include studies on Arctic halocline warming, deepwater oxygen deficits, and wind-driven nutrient pumps. He teaches physical oceanography and meteorology, and his lab/teams are engaged in cutting-edge projects like eSWEETS3 on wind energy impacts. His work bridges observational techniques with climate impacts, emphasizing the link between physical processes and ecosystem health.
