Dr. Ben Lincoln is a Research Fellow at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, specializing in physical oceanography with a focus on turbulence and ocean mixing processes. His research combines observational techniques with theoretical approaches to understand complex dynamics of ocean currents and mixing phenomena across various marine environments, from the Arctic Ocean to shelf seas.
Dr. Lincoln earned his PhD in Thermocline mixing in shelf seas (2013), MSc in Applied Physical Oceanography (2007), and BSc in Physics from the University of Surrey (2003). His educational background provides a strong foundation for investigating the physical processes that drive ocean mixing.
His research interests center on understanding how physical processes such as waves, tides, inertial oscillations, and internal waves drive turbulence and mixing in the ocean. He investigates critical questions about vertical mixing and heat fluxes in the Arctic Ocean, nutrient fluxes affecting primary production, ocean mixing's impact on CO2 absorption, and forces on tidal turbines due to marine turbulence. His work spans observational studies in polar regions to theoretical considerations of mixing processes in shelf seas and coastal environments.
Dr. Lincoln's publication record shows a progression from fundamental studies of ocean mixing processes to investigations of how human infrastructure and climate change are altering these processes. His recent work focuses on interactions between renewable energy infrastructure and ocean dynamics, including how offshore wind farms create turbulence that affects seabed stress and water column mixing, and how tidal energy sites influence local hydrodynamics.
- Key contributions include demonstrating how tidal mixing helps maintain oxygen levels in stratified seas
- Documenting how declining sea ice is changing internal wave patterns in the Arctic
- Investigating anthropogenic mixing effects from offshore wind farm infrastructure
His research has practical implications for renewable energy development, climate change understanding, and marine ecosystem management. Through his work on tidal energy sites and offshore wind farms, he contributes to the sustainable development of marine renewable energy resources while advancing fundamental understanding of ocean physics.
