Christopher Auckland is a Senior Research Associate at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, where he investigates ocean mixing dynamics around floating wind turbines using autonomous gliders. His research bridges physical oceanography and climate science, examining how turbulence affects stratification and biogeochemistry in shelf seas. Previously, he contributed to polar oceanography at the British Antarctic Survey and Stanford University.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, British Antarctic Survey & University of Southampton (2020–2025)
- MSci in Physics, Imperial College London (2015–2019)
Research Focus: His work integrates fieldwork (mooring timeseries, gliders) and numerical modeling (MITgcm) to study: 1) Wind-driven boundary currents in polar regions, 2) Turbulence impacts on nutrient cycling in energy infrastructure zones, and 3) Climate change effects on ocean circulation. His 2024 JGR Oceans publication revealed wind-mediated export mechanisms of Antarctic Bottom Water, highlighting interactions between surface conditions and deep-ocean processes.
Professional Service: Serves on the Challenger Society for Marine Science council, managing student travel awards and career development initiatives.
