Tom Lewis is an Associate Professor at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), affiliated with the Department of Converging Media (including Photography and Filmmaking) and the School of the Foundation Year. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Converging Media and as Director of the School of the Foundation Year (2012–2013). Prior to joining KCAI in 2005, he taught at the University of Washington School of Art and worked in curatorial and restoration roles at institutions like the Joseph and Elaine Monson Collection and Crux Photographic Restoration.

His research focuses on the intersection of early lens-based drawing and the materiality of photography. He works in both photography and large-scale graphite drawings, with exhibitions at venues like the Henry Art Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
