Lewis J. Crawford is a mixed media photographer and Associate Professor at the University of Utah, where he also serves as Director of MFA Graduate Studies. He earned an MFA in Photography (University of Utah, 2009) and a BFA in Photography (Arizona State University, 2005), graduating summa cum laude.
Research & Artistic Practice
Crawford’s work, termed Marktitious Imagery, focuses on the semiotic reassignment of marks in human-made landscapes. Through Gestalt theories and Russian Constructivism, he examines urban spaces using photography, ink/graphite drawings, and digital manipulation to explore relationships between positive/negative space and viewer interpretation.

His solo exhibitions include Genetic Quilt (Nox Contemporary, 2021) and Constructs (Finch Lane Gallery, 2016). Collaborations include coLaborART installations and the Construct series (2017–2024), which merges photography with physical mark-making.
