Dr. Tom Johnston is a Research Fellow in the Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group (ECSG) at the University of York's Department of Health Sciences. He serves as co-module leader for Epidemiology courses and contributes to undergraduate teaching in Biomedical Sciences. His interdisciplinary work bridges epidemiology, cancer research, and infectious disease studies with significant focus on global health applications and resource-limited settings.
Dr. Johnston's educational background includes:
- BSc in Biology from the University of Guelph
- MSc in Epidemiology from the University of Guelph
- PhD in Mathematical Biology/Epidemiology from the University of Reading
Dr. Johnston's research focuses on the intersection of infectious diseases and cancer epidemiology, with particular expertise in global cancer patterns and infection-related malignancies. His work spans veterinary epidemiology (including analysis of the Randomized Badger Culling Trial data) to current investigations of the relationship between infectious agents and childhood cancers, especially Burkitt lymphoma in East Africa. He has extensive experience with large-scale registry studies including the United Kingdom Childhood Cancer Study and the European Myelodysplastic Syndromes Registry. His methodological approaches include longitudinal cohort analyses, case-control designs, and utilization of routine health data for epidemiological research.
Analysis of Dr. Johnston's recent publications reveals a strong concentration on cancer epidemiology with emphasis on childhood cancers in diverse settings. His work frequently examines the relationship between infectious agents and cancer development, particularly regarding Burkitt lymphoma in Africa, while also contributing significantly to studies on cancer survivorship, myelodysplastic syndromes, and global cancer incidence patterns. His research demonstrates methodological sophistication through large-scale registry studies, multinational collaborations, and innovative approaches to studying cancer in resource-limited environments.
Dr. Johnston actively supervises graduate students and would welcome PhD candidates interested in epidemiology of oncogenic infections, treatment inference from observational studies, and time-to-event and longitudinal models. His research is supported through multiple international collaborations with institutions in Africa and Europe.
Dr. Johnston is affiliated with several key research initiatives:
- Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group (ECSG)
- Children with Down Syndrome Study (CDSS)
- United Kingdom Childhood Cancer Study (UKCCS)
- European Myelodysplastic Syndromes Registry (EUMDS)
