Tom Gorman is an Assistant Professor (Academic) at Coventry University's CAS School of Arts & Creative Industries. His work bridges traditional theatre practices with digital innovation, focusing on telepresence, distance learning, and immersive performance. He holds a PhD in Theatre and Media from the University of Ulster and has over three decades of experience as a theatre director, actor, and educator.
Education: BA(Hons) English Language and Literature (Queen's University Belfast, 1989); PhD in Theatre and Media (University of Ulster, 2006); PGCE in Secondary Drama (University of Wales, 2007).
Research interests include self-referential dramaturgy, Renaissance theatre, and the integration of digital technologies in live performance. His projects, such as the internationally awarded telepresence rehearsal systems, have collaborated with institutions like the University of Tampere (Finland), Purdue University (US), and Anilla Cultural (Uruguay/Mexico/Brazil). He sits on committees for the Nordic Centre for Digital Presence and Network Performing Arts Production Workshop, promoting global R&E network applications in arts education.
Awards include the Reimagine Education Gold Awards (2016, 2018), Guardian University Award for Internationalisation (2020), and the E-Culture Award (2021). He has led COIL projects and field trips across Europe, North America, and Asia, emphasizing cross-cultural exchange.
