Dr. Tom Coens is a Research Associate Professor with the Andrew Jackson Papers project in the Department of History at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Yale (BA History) and Harvard PhD recipient, his dissertation examined 'The Formation of the Jackson Party, 1822-1825'. His scholarship focuses on American political, intellectual, and social history from the Revolutionary era through the Civil War.
Current research includes authoring a history of Andrew Jackson and Indian Removal for Johns Hopkins University Press. His publications analyze:

- Jacksonian democracy formation
- Native American policy evolution
- 19th century intellectual movements
- Presidential leadership patterns
As Associate Editor for The Papers of Andrew Jackson, Volume 11, he contributes to authoritative historical documentation. His recent book chapter 'Young Hickory's Apprenticeship' examines James K. Polk's political development during the Bank War.
