Tom Barry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human. His research focuses on understanding and improving mental health by examining social, cognitive, and biological processes influencing how individuals respond to life events, including trauma, therapy, and daily experiences. He also investigates how similar processes affect physical health and chronic pain. Barry leads or collaborates on projects funded by bodies such as the British Academy and MRC, including initiatives like 'Harnessing Large Language Models to Measure Autobiographical Memory' and 'GW4 Men’s Mental Health Research Group.'
His research interests span mental health interventions, fear learning, and memory specificity. Notable projects include exploring the psychosocial mechanisms of chronic pain and developing digital tools like the FLARe app for fear conditioning studies. Barry is actively involved in educational research, co-researching with undergraduates and investigating research-based curricula in Asian universities. He accepts doctoral students and has published over 80 articles on topics ranging from anxiety disorders to criminal justice system factors influencing mental health.
