Dr. Declan Barry is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Research Director at the APT Foundation, Inc., a community-based organization affiliated with Yale that provides medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) in Southern New England. Additionally, he founded the APT Foundation's Pain Treatment Services, an interdisciplinary clinic combining cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise interventions, integrative health approaches, and pharmacotherapy.
Dr. Barry has trained and supervised Yale psychiatry, psychology, and nursing fellows; physician associates; social workers; and external master’s interns in interdisciplinary treatment approaches for chronic pain and OUD. His research focuses on developing treatment protocols for co-occurring OUD and chronic pain, examining sociocultural, psychological, and biological factors in pain/addiction treatment, and optimizing recovery models through NIH-funded studies (U01 HL150596-01 and RM1 DA055310-01). He also co-edits journals including Pain Medicine and Current Addiction Reports.
Recent peer-reviewed articles highlight his work in sleep health, pain management, and social determinants among OUD patients. Key collaborations include Lynn Madden, Mark Beitel, and Robert Kerns. Dr. Barry's NIH-funded initiatives include the CLOUDS longitudinal study on sleep-substance use connections and the SC-POWR stepped-care trial for chronic pain/OUD. He also leads APT-funded mixed-methods studies exploring clinical needs of OUD patients with/without chronic pain.
