Tomás Torres Cebada

Tomás Torres Cebada is a Research Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and an Associate Senior Scientist at IMDEA Nanociencia. He serves as Director of the Institute of Advanced Research in Chemical Sciences (IAdChem). His career includes postdoctoral research at the Max-Planck Institute and the CSIC-Department of Organic Chemistry, followed by roles in industry and academia. He has held academic positions since 1985, becoming a full Professor in 2000.

Education: PhD in Chemistry (1978, UAM), postdoctoral studies at Max-Planck Institute (1978–1980) and CSIC-Department of Organic Chemistry (1980–1981). Professional roles include Senior Researcher at Abelló, S.A./MSD (1981–1985).

Research focuses on functional organic materials, organic solar cells, optoelectronics, and nanomedicine. His group pioneered phthalocyanine-based photosensitizers (e.g., TT1) and subphthalocyanine n-type materials for solar cells. They also lead projects in nanoparticle-linked photosensitizers for nanomedicine under the EU-funded CosmoPHOS initiative.

Key awards include the Linstead Career Award (2016), Elhuyar-Goldschmidt Prize (2018), and election to the European Academy of Sciences. He supervises 40+ dissertations and holds 41 patents (27 licensed). His group secured 10 EU-funded projects and 12 international/national grants.
