Rodolfo Miranda Soriano

Rodolfo Miranda Soriano is a Full Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and Director of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA-Nanociencia) since February 2007. He also serves as Head of the Surface Science Lab of the UAM (LASUAM).

His academic journey includes:

• PhD in Physics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1981)
• Research positions in Munich and Berlin with Gerhard Ertl (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2007)
• Full Professor at UAM since 1990
• Former Vice-chancellor of Research and Scientific Policy at UAM (1998-2002)

Prof. Miranda's research spans multiple cutting-edge areas:

• Low dimensional magnetism
• Molecular self-organization on surfaces
• Epitaxial growth mechanisms

His instrumental contributions include developing specialized equipment for Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM), Helium Atom Scattering (HAS), and Angular Resolved Photoemission (ARUPS) in Ultra High Vacuum conditions. With over 270 publications and nearly 10,000 citations, his work demonstrates significant impact across surface science and nanotechnology.

Prof. Miranda has actively contributed to the scientific community through advisory roles at prestigious institutions including the Surface Science Division of IUVSTA, Max Planck Institute fur Mikrostruktur Physik, and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). He has supervised more than 40 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, demonstrating strong commitment to academic mentorship. His current research continues to advance nanoscience through leadership at IMDEA-Nanociencia, focusing on interdisciplinary applications of surface physics and nanotechnology.
