Toivo Burlin is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Musicology at Stockholm University's Department of Culture and Aesthetics. His academic roles include teaching and research in sound and music production, music media technologies, and mediatization. He holds a PhD from the University of Gothenburg (2008) and has extensive teaching experience at universities in Sweden and abroad, including Dalarna University, University of Skövde, and guest lectures at institutions in Finland, Norway, and Germany.
Research interests focus on music production practices, spatiality in music, 20th-century art music, folk music, and popular music with an emphasis on production aspects. His work explores the intersection of music, technology, and cultural history, including studies of King Crimson's surround sound re-releases and Swedish recording practices from the 1920s onward.
Key projects include Saivo's song: music, sounds and space in performances of the nature being represented by Vitra and Musik och spatialitet i 2000-talets amatör- och semiprofessionella musikproduktion. Over 40 publications span academic articles, book chapters, and edited volumes, with topics ranging from historical recording practices to contemporary amateur music production.
Burlin has held administrative roles, including Vice Chair of the Technology and Natural Sciences Committee at Dalarna University and course responsibility at multiple institutions. He is affiliated with Forum Modernism, a research group at Stockholm University studying modernism across disciplines.
