Professor Toine Egberts is a distinguished academic at Utrecht University, holding a professorship in Clinical Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacy within the Faculty of Science. With a career spanning over three decades, he has established himself as a leading expert in clinical pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology, and drug safety. Since November 2018, he has served as the director of doctor education for the Graduate School of Life Sciences at Utrecht University, where he has guided over 70 PhD students to completion.
Professor Egberts' research interests encompass clinical pharmacology, clinical pharmacoepidemiology of drugs used in daily clinical practice, innovations in prescribing, monitoring and evaluation of medicines, and sustainability in pharmacy ('green pharmacy'). His work bridges the gap between the drug environment and patient care, focusing on reducing medication harm while promoting environmentally sustainable pharmaceutical practices.
His extensive publication record, comprising approximately 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles, demonstrates consistent contributions across pharmacovigilance, clinical pharmacy, oncology, geriatrics, and medication safety. Recent publications show a strong focus on real-world data applications, medication waste reduction, drug safety monitoring, and innovative approaches to pharmaceutical care. His work frequently addresses practical clinical challenges while contributing to broader pharmaceutical science.
- Senior Jan Glerum Award (2016) for excellence in training hospital pharmacists
- Huizinga penning for research related to clinical pharmacy
- Member of editorial board for Drug Safety journal
- Active participant in multiple professional committees including CCMO and Netherlands Expertcenter for Pharmacotherapy for older people (EPHOR)
Professor Egberts has been deeply involved in education throughout his career, particularly in training hospital pharmacists. His leadership as director of doctor education reflects his commitment to developing the next generation of academic professionals.
