Todd Trooien is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at South Dakota State University (SDSU), affiliated with the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering. He specializes in water resource management, livestock waste management, and irrigation engineering. His research focuses on optimizing agricultural practices to enhance environmental quality and crop production efficiency, including studies on winter manure application, drainage water management, and subsurface drip irrigation.
Education: B.S., M.S. (Agricultural Engineering, SDSU, 1983/1985); Ph.D. (Agricultural Engineering, Colorado State University, 1988).
Teaching responsibilities span undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses like Natural Resources Engineering, Soil and Water Mechanics, and Advanced Irrigation Engineering. He coordinates academic advising for freshmen and supports student transitions into the ABE program through math study sessions and introductory courses.
Research interests include irrigation management, soil-water interactions, and environmental impact mitigation. His work addresses challenges like nutrient runoff reduction, precision farming, and sustainable drainage systems. He has secured grants from agencies such as the EPA, USDA, and commodity groups, supporting projects on water quality, crop production, and CAFO waste management.
- Awards: 2015-2016 Academic Advisor of the Year (Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering).
- Grants: Funded by EPA Section 319, Bureau of Reclamation, SD Department of Agriculture, and industry partnerships.
- Labs/Teams: Collaborates on projects involving vegetative treatment systems, woodchip bioreactors, and subsurface drip irrigation technology.
Trooien’s contributions bridge engineering and environmental science, emphasizing practical solutions for agricultural sustainability and resource efficiency.
