Todd Destigter is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), focusing on English teacher education, urban literacies, and the role of literacy in democracy. Formerly a high school teacher of English, social studies, and Spanish, he transitioned to academia to explore the intersections of literacy, politics, and culture. His work emphasizes pragmatic educational approaches and democratic engagement through reading and writing.
Research interests include American Pragmatism, ethnographic methods in education, and the socio-political dimensions of literacy. His notable publication Reflections of a Citizen Teacher (2001) won the Richard A. Meade Award. He is currently developing a new book project, Teaching in the Shadows of Pragmatism, based on ethnographic research in a Chicago high school.
