Todd Applegate is an Assistant Dean for International Programs, Department Head, and R. Harold and Patsy Harrison Chair in Poultry Science at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on poultry nutrition and intestinal physiology, particularly nutrient interactions in the gastrointestinal tract to improve absorption and reduce excretion of phosphorus, nitrogen, and ammonia. He holds a Ph.D. in Animal Science from The Ohio State University and M.S./B.S. in Animal Science from Iowa State University.
Research Interests: Dr. Applegate's translational research investigates dietary strategies to minimize nutrient losses from pathogens, toxins, and stressors in poultry, with an emphasis on amino acid digestibility, supplemental amino acids, acidulants, and gut microbiota modulation. His work spans mycotoxin toxicity, intestinal inflammation, and sustainable production practices.
Scientific Awards:
- American Feed Industry Association Poultry Nutrition Research Award (PSA) - 2009
- Maple Leaf Farms Duck Research Award (PSA) - 2009
- B.R.A.I.N. (Biomin Research and Innovation Network) Research Award, Salzburg, Austria - 2009
- USDA – National Excellence in Multistate Research Award - 2011
- Evonik Degussa Award for Achievement in Poultry Science (PSA) - 2013
