Alfons Jansman is a WIAS Researcher in Animal Nutrition at Wageningen University & Research, affiliated with Wageningen Livestock Research. His research focuses on optimizing feed ingredients, protein nutrition, and gut health in pigs and poultry, with particular emphasis on sustainable and circular food production systems. He leads multiple projects addressing low protein diets, feed efficiency, and the impact of sanitary conditions on animal performance.
Research interests include amino acid metabolism, functional protein sources (e.g., spray-dried plasma), and the role of feed ingredients in mitigating damaging behaviors like tail biting. He has authored over 295 publications and contributed to datasets on microbiota, metabolomics, and intestinal health. His work bridges nutritional science with practical farming applications, aiming to improve animal welfare and reduce environmental impact.
Jansman has participated in conferences and media discussions on circular agriculture and feed sector innovations. He supervises projects such as LWV19175 (Low Protein Diets and Behaviour) and KD-2024-043 (Climate Benefits of Circular Poultry Farming). His recent studies highlight pigs' ability to self-select amino acids and the microbiological signatures of gut health under different dietary regimens.
