Dr. Toby Wise is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Neuroimaging at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). His research focuses on understanding neural and computational mechanisms underlying mood and anxiety disorders, particularly repetitive negative thought patterns. He employs methods like computational modeling and neuroimaging to study learning, decision-making, and naturalistic assessment techniques. His lab, the Wise Lab, investigates how decision-making processes contribute to mental health conditions. Key collaborations include Wellcome Trust-funded projects on pathological worry mechanisms.
Research interests include transdiagnostic mental health mechanisms, computational psychiatry, and the neurobiology of anxiety and depression. Recent work explores uncertainty aversion, threat avoidance behaviors, and the role of serotonin in depression. He has published in high-impact journals like Biol. Psychiatry, Cell Reports, and EMOTION.
Dr. Wise co-leads an active project (2023–2031) investigating neurocomputational mechanisms of pathological worry, supported by the Wellcome Trust. His lab emphasizes innovative tools like the Fake IQ Test for self-reflection measurement and selective item re-weighting in psychological assessments.
