Toby Richards

Professor Toby Richards is the Lawrence Brown Chair in Vascular Surgery, Head of Division of Surgery, and Director of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He holds adjunct roles as Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL) and Monash University. His research focuses on clinical trials, vascular surgery, anaemia, and iron metabolism, with over 272 publications and $17M in grants. He leads major initiatives like the CRR platform for WA’s coordinated COVID-19 research and the STRIVEwa network for medical student research.

Richards has supervised 16 PhD students and 60+ graduate projects, mentoring surgical researchers globally. He chairs the CoRE Centre to foster collaborative research and led the POSTvenTT trial with 540+ collaborators. Awards include the 2022 Medical School Mentorship Award and WAHTN Best Presentation (2021). His work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals through healthcare innovation and equitable research practices.

Recent studies address iron deficiency in women, post-operative anaemia treatments, and transfusion safety. He chairs key organizations like NATA and ACTA and has delivered 75+ international conference presentations.
