Professor Tobe Levin von Gleichen is a Visiting Professor at Harvard University, based in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. His work focuses on ending female genital mutilation (FGM) and related gendered abuses through interdisciplinary research and advocacy. He co-authored the Action:FGM Manifesto presented at No.10 Downing Street and collaborates with King’s College London on a proposal examining cross-cultural abuses of women using a human rights framework.
He organized the 'Patriarchal Inscriptions' webinar series (Oct-Dec 2020), exploring themes like FGM in social media, medical support for survivors, and the intersection of democracy/populism with patriarchal traditions. His research emphasizes mapping global FGM practices and institutionalizing FGM studies as an academic field to address the lack of expert resources.
Key collaborations include work with Prof. Maria Jaschok and midwife Comfort Momoh MBE. His proposals aim to combine ethnographic research with policy applications to improve women’s lives, challenging cultural silos and racist narratives surrounding FGM.
