Tjerk Zult is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Vision and Eye Research Institute within the School of Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge. His research focuses on understanding how vision loss affects the performance of everyday activities and the underlying neurophysiological and biomechanical mechanisms of motor performance in both healthy and diseased individuals.
His research interests include:
- Biomechanics of human movement
- Neuroscience
- Human motion analysis using VICON system
- Human neurophysiology
- Gaze behaviour using eye-trackers
- Balance assessment using force plates
- Effects of vision loss on daily activities
Zult's research integrates multiple measurement techniques to understand why individuals with vision loss experience more difficulty performing everyday tasks and why they fall more often. His work has particular relevance for developing interventions to improve mobility and reduce fall risk in visually impaired populations.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on cross-education phenomena, vision impairment effects on movement, and rehabilitation applications. The research spans from fundamental neuroscience investigations of neural mechanisms to applied clinical studies examining rehabilitation techniques for orthopedic and neurological conditions.
Zult is an active member of several professional organizations:
- International Society of Posture and Gait Research (ISPGR)
- International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK)
- American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
- European College of Sport Science (ECSS)
- Society for Neuroscience (SfN)
- Dutch Society for Human Movement Sciences (VvBN)
He serves on review panels for 14 international journals and regularly presents his work at national and international conferences. His PhD research at the University Medical Center Groningen evaluated the clinical relevance and neural mechanisms of unilateral resistance training with augmented sensory feedback in healthy and diseased individuals.
