Associate Professor Tirtha Banerjee is affiliated with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). His research focuses on turbulence and scalar exchange processes between the atmosphere and ecosystems, leveraging numerical simulations, experimental tools, and advanced data analysis. He leads the Boundary Layers and Turbulence (BLT) Lab, which investigates multi-scale organized eddy motions influencing heat, carbon dioxide, and pollutant transport. Recently, he collaborated with Surrey University’s School of Mechanical Engineering through a fellowship with Dr. Giovanni Iacobello, studying wind flows over forested hills to enhance environmental modeling accuracy. This work integrates experimental facilities like Surrey’s EnFlo wind tunnel with numerical experiments to validate hypotheses on land-atmosphere interactions. Outputs include planned seminars and training courses for early-career researchers.
Research emphasizes complex terrain and vegetation canopy effects on turbulence dynamics, with applications to crop heat damage, wildfire behavior, and pollutant dispersal. The BLT Lab acknowledges support from undisclosed funding agencies, reflecting sustained interest in advancing boundary layer and environmental fluid mechanics.
