Dr. Tina Q Tan is Professor of Pediatrics at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, and a Pediatric Infectious Diseases attending at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She serves as Medical Director of the International Patient Services Program, co-Director of the Pediatric Travel Medicine Clinic, and Director of the International Adoptee Clinic. Dr. Tan is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Tan received her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans (1988). She completed her residency and chief residency at Baylor Health Care System (1991) and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at Baylor Health Care System (1994).
Dr. Tan's research focuses on infectious disease epidemiology and vaccine research. Her primary areas include pneumococcal infections and vaccines, pertussis epidemiology and prevention strategies, and community-acquired MRSA infections. She investigates the use of Tdap vaccination in pregnant women and close contacts of newborns, and studies vaccine acceptance and barriers among healthcare providers. Her work often involves collaborations with OB/GYN departments and the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. She serves as Principal-Investigator in the U.S. Multicenter Pneumococcal Surveillance Study Group and participates in vaccine and antibiotic clinical trials.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on global pertussis epidemiology across multiple continents, pneumococcal disease burden measurement, and vaccine uptake patterns. The research spans Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the United States, reflecting her international perspective. Her work combines clinical research with public health policy implications, particularly regarding vaccination strategies for vulnerable populations including children, pregnant women, and cancer patients.
Dr. Tan has received numerous prestigious awards throughout her career:

Dr. Tan serves in numerous leadership roles including as Chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Infectious Diseases, member of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases, and member of the Board of Directors of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. She serves on the Immunization Advisory Committee for the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Her grant work includes participation as Principal-Investigator in vaccine and antibiotic clinical trials and multiple vaccine survey studies examining awareness and acceptance among healthcare providers.
Dr. Tan is actively involved with the Global Pertussis Initiative as Co-Chairperson and US Representative, and serves on the Steering Committee of the Latin America Without Pertussis Initiative. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the World Association of Infectious Diseases and Immunological Disorders and the US National Pertussis Task Force. Her work extends to vaccine advisory boards of major pharmaceutical companies including Merck, Sanofi Pasteur, GSK and Pfizer/Wyeth, demonstrating her significant influence in shaping pediatric infectious disease practice and policy both nationally and internationally.
