Watson's research explores the intersections of empire, infrastructure, and ecological practices. He has written extensively on Caribbean literature's evolution, emphasizing Creole dialects, print culture, and subaltern narratives. His work also examines the role of plants in urban infrastructure, linking Miami's botanical history to global imperial networks.
Recent publications analyze 19th-century British imperialism and its legacy in the Caribbean, focusing on marginalized figures like Black Bahamian gardener Nathan Sands and imperial middlemen such as Louis Celeste Lecesne. His scholarship bridges ecocriticism, postcolonial theory, and infrastructure studies, revealing how material structures and cultural practices shaped colonial and postcolonial identities.
