Robert Antoni is a Trinidadian-American-Bahamian novelist and creative writing instructor currently teaching in the Pan-European MFA for Creative Writing program with residencies in Barcelona, Vienna, and Dublin. He has previously held teaching positions at The New School, Columbia University, the University of Miami, the University of Iowa, and Johns Hopkins University.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in English Literature, The University of Iowa
- MFA in Creative Writing, The University of Iowa
- MA in Creative Writing, Johns Hopkins University
- BA in English Literature, Duke University
Antoni's creative work explores Caribbean identity through magical realism, vernacular storytelling, and cross-genre experimentation. His narratives interrogate colonial legacies, racial dynamics, and sexual fluidity while drawing deeply from Trinidadian folklore, Bahamian history, and Hindu mythology. He employs West Indian dialects and structural innovation to create layered narratives that challenge conventional literary boundaries.
His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with Caribbean cultural motifs, particularly the interplay between historical trauma and communal resilience. Works like Divina Trace and Carnival reveal recurring patterns: mythological retellings adapted to Caribbean contexts, explorations of gender nonconformity, and the transformative power of oral storytelling traditions within postcolonial societies.
His major recognitions include:
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2010)
- Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Novel
- OCM Bocas Prize for Best Caribbean Book
- Aga Kahn Prize from The Paris Review
- National Endowment for the Arts Grant
- Lifetime Achievement Award from Trinidad & Tobago National Library
As an educator, Antoni mentors emerging writers in fiction and nonfiction across international platforms. His Guggenheim Fellowship and NEA grant directly supported the development of As Flies to Whatless Boys, demonstrating the critical role of funding in advancing literary scholarship. His forthcoming novel Foreign Bodies continues his exploration of Caribbean women's experiences through vernacular narration.
Through the Pan-European MFA program's rotating residencies, Antoni facilitates transnational creative exchanges between Caribbean, European, and American literary communities, fostering collaborative dialogues across cultural boundaries.
