His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Education from the University of Michigan
- M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University
- B.A. in History from Duke University
Cain's research spans both historical and contemporary issues in higher education, with particular focus on academic freedom, student activism, and unionization. His scholarly work examines the intersection of politics, rights, and institutional structures in colleges and universities. He has made significant contributions to understanding LGBTQ+ student rights history, faculty unionization movements, and the implementation of Title IX. Cain's research methodology often employs historical analysis to illuminate current challenges in higher education governance and policy.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on marginalized voices in higher education history, particularly regarding student voting rights in the 1970s, LGBTQ+ student advocacy, and faculty responses to political pressures. Cain frequently collaborates with other scholars, particularly Michael S. Hevel, to explore the historical dimensions of contemporary higher education challenges. His work bridges educational history, policy analysis, and organizational studies within the academy.
Cain has received several notable honors:
- UGA Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellow (2017-2018)
- AERA Outstanding Reviewer Award (2018)
- AERA Queer SIG Best Article Award (2023, with Michael S. Hevel)

He previously served as associate editor for the History of Education Quarterly and sits on the Council of Scholars of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. His grant-funded research includes multiple Spencer Foundation projects examining faculty unionization history and contemporary academic freedom challenges.
