Timothy Miles is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. His work focuses on diseases of hops, blueberries, grapes, and other berry crops, with expertise in mycology, genomics, pathogen detection, and molecular diagnostics. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from MSU. Miles’ research integrates field studies and molecular tools to address crop disease challenges, particularly fungicide resistance and sustainable management practices.

Research Interests:
Miles investigates fungal pathogens affecting specialty crops, emphasizing molecular diagnostics for rapid pathogen identification and fungicide resistance monitoring. His work includes developing diagnostic assays for pathogens like Erysiphe necator (grape powdery mildew) and Pseudoperonospora humuli (hop downy mildew). He also explores host resistance mechanisms and the impact of fungicides on microbial communities in crops. Recent studies highlight the role of genomics in understanding pathogen population dynamics and resistance evolution.
Advising & Grants: Miles mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students, with over 30 co-authored publications involving student researchers. His work is supported by grants from Project GREEEN (Michigan Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture) and industry collaborations. He leads the Small Fruit and Hop Pathology program at MSU, providing extension services to growers on disease management strategies.
Labs & Teams: Miles collaborates with the USDA-ARS Crop Improvement and Protection Research Unit and the MSU Plant Pathology Lab. His team develops field-ready diagnostic tools and integrates molecular data with agronomic practices to improve crop resilience.
